WHERE’S YOUR FOCUS?
Wherever I happened to be in the past two weeks I heard people exclaiming over and over, ‘I have never before seen anything like this!’ In all reality I haven’t been anywhere in the past week; not because I’m ill but because there is no urgent need for me to be going anywhere, so I stay put.
In any case, I’ve heard that line more often than I care to remember.
What they are referring to is the aggressive virus that has brought some countries literally to a standstill and is doing its best to annihilate the rest of the world.
Many are becoming filled with fear and anxiety because of job loss caused by shut downs, not to mention the added stress of not being able to find much needed supplies and the basics of life.
I’ve heard this being referred to as a fluid situation and ever-changing it certainly is.
The apostle Peter comes to mind. If ever there was anyone caught in the midst of a ‘fluid situation’ it was he! As if being caught out in a boat in the middle of a storm wasn’t enough, he actually stepped out of the boat and right onto the water. I’m sure he quickly found that fluid didn’t give the same stability to his feet that he would have had on the rocky paths he was used to walking on. Nevertheless, Jesus had commanded him to do it, therefore he took the step of obedience.
The point here is that he found he could walk on water as long as he was focused on the Lord Jesus.
The instant he took his eyes off his Master he noticed the wind and the waves. That’s when the fear set in. We have all seen what fear and panic does to the human race, and the devastation goes way beyond the tissue aisles in the supermarket! The paralysis of common sense, the selfishness and cowardice displayed and the magnetic draw towards all things negative all point to our need for a shift of focus.
Yes, if we choose to turn our eyes on Jesus at this very critical time in history we will be encouraged, we’ll be lifted up out of the angry waves around us and we will find reasons to give thanks for all the blessings we experience daily.
So many are hurting around us; there is death, destruction and devastation at every turn and more negative news everyday. May I suggest an antidote? How about finding someone you can reach out to? In this time of distancing ourselves physically we are still blessed with technology. Make phone calls, send texts or emails. Give a bit of good news, read the GOOD NEWS aka: the Bible!
Listen to worship music and let your focus be placed on the One who can actually carry you through a difficult time. He is waiting to catch your eye and lift you up above all the worry and care.
May I encourage you to keep your eyes on Him as you walk above the storm on the way to the party.
